Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste from one of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
